Our History
Betteshanger Social Welfare Scheme Sports & Social Club is situated on a piece of land known as the “Welfare Ground” situated on Cavell Square in the area of Mill Hill near the coastal town of Deal.
Back in the early 30s this ground was leased by the new welfare organisation so that Football, Rugby and Cricket could be played by the new workforce at Betteshanger Colliery.
In 1936, the 12-acre ground was given as a Jubilee gift to the employees at Betteshanger Colliery provided they built the play areas and pavilions themselves; this included a new bowls green.
The year 2000 saw the new sports club established, this included a full size 4 rink indoor bowls, 10 changing rooms and 3 fair size halls.
The welfare sections that use the sports club are: Cricket (Senior & Junior), Football (Senior & Junior), Brass Band, Indoor Bowls, Outdoor Bowls and our Social Section with live bands on a Saturday evening. Not forgetting our sister club, Betteshanger Social Club & Community Centre situated out at the old pit site, Circular Road, Betteshanger.
The club has always been available to the local community as a social centre, at the moment we host a weekly morning breakfast club on a Tuesday with Darts, Pool and Bingo being regular users. The function room is hired out most week-ends.
The Welfare Scheme also has an Allotment Section (Hillside House Allotment & Gardening Association), Sea Fishing (Betteshanger Colliery Welfare Sea Angling Club), and a Pigeon Club.
In March 2019, the Bar became a Private Limited Company, a requirement for all charities who have a bar on their premises. The company is known as Bettes Bar, and is at the forefront of all of our functions.
